SUPER ONE SERIES
Round 7, PF International, Grantham
25th September 2016
With only 3 practice sessions before timed qualifying, it was vital to get the setup and tactics right, but when Joseph headed out at the front with a team mate for qualifying, it proved to be the wrong decision, as they were too far in front of the pack; pushing on their own, they weren’t fast enough, needing to be in the pack with a “tow and chase” for the many straights at this circuit.
A qualifying position of 11th in his group meant starting both heats in 9th place.
Heat 1 saw Joseph go from 9th to 7th in laps one & two, then make a move up into 3rd in the third lap, where he stayed until the end, with the front two having gotten away at the start and putting in very fast laps, leaving no chance of catching them.
Heat 2 brought 5th place, which overall meant a P4 starting position for Sunday’s Final 1.
Sunday’s first final didn’t get off to a good start, being hit hard from behind over the Litchfield bridge which cost dearly, dropping back to mid position.
Undeterred, he fought back, setting some very fast laps back through to 6th place by the last lap, then, heading into the chicane last in a group of four karts, came out at the front and carried tremendous speed right round the bottom complex into the last straight to claim 3rd. All this secured him 2nd place in the SuperOne British Championship, a great achievement!
Heading in to Final 2 full of confidence and a determination to finish his season with a win, after a decent start it looked like he was struggling with pace in laps 6 & 7, then just at the end of the main straight disaster struck, an engine seizure leaving him unable to finish his last Cadet SuperOne race………..
